V1.1. MaPEar Lisboa (Lisbon)

09:45-13:00
Where: Jardim das Amoreiras, next to the Real Capela de Nossa Senhora de Monserrate
Capacity: maximum 20 pax

Chair

Ana Marçal - Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa | CML, Portugal

Developed by the Urban Information Center of Lisbon (Lisbon City Council), in partnership with the DINAMIA-CET research center (ISCTE-IUL), the activity “MaPEar Lisboa” is an experience that implies reading and analyzing urban space, using walking, observation and sensory perception as methodology.

Over the course of 3 hours, participants, organized into groups, are invited to explore an area of the city – Largo do Rato - and “map” the territory, according to a certain theme or premise.

By marking their chosen route on a map, they will record the situations that evoke the proposed theme, complementing the survey with images, recordings or notes.

Afterwards, all the contributions are presented and a global map is drawn up with the main occurrences identified.

Chair: Paula Rebelo - Departamento de Espaço Público | CML, Portugal

‘A Square in Every Neighbourhood’ Programme - Based on a square, a street, a shopping area, a neighbourhood garden, or an existing or planned collective facility, this programme proposed organising a meeting point for the local community, a microcentre that would concentrate activity and employment, establishing itself as a public space of excellence and a place to be, and where pedestrian accessibility and other soft modes of transport such as bicycles and public transport were prioritised, with the rearrangement of parking and the promotion of traffic calming measures, and with a methodology that also included an important stage of public participation. The aim is to show some of the places that have been renovated as a result of this programme.

Chair: Pedro Nave - Div. Plano de Acessibilidade Pedonal | CML, Portugal

A municipal pilot project was developed at Alexandre Herculano Street (a road with heavy traffic) aiming to demonstrate how it was possible to improve pedestrian accessibility conditions in a consolidated urban area by implementing traffic calming measures. The project also encompassed testing equipment to aid blind people and people with low vision at pedestrian crossings. Seven years after the intervention, it is now possible to see the practical effects of the adopted measures.

V2.1. Experiencing a 15-minute city (Braga)

14:00-17:30
Where: Praça do Município
Capacity: maximum 25 pax

Chair: Filipa Corais - Municipality of Braga, Portugal

The municipality of Braga covers an approximate area of 200 km2 where most of the population lives less than 20 minutes on foot or by bike from the city center. With a pedestrian area of about 150.000 m2 (the largest in the country), the historic center of the city connects, at relatively short distances, with a series of relevant educational, cultural, religious and administrative facilities. These surroundings are part of a set of routes that, due to their functional and patrimonial character, present themselves as an important axis of pedestrian flows where the municipality has sought to intervene, improving the accessibility and comfort conditions of the public space. Avenida da Liberdade, recently intervened under the project "Eu Já Passo Aqui!" (I Already Pass Here!), is one of these examples. The project “Eu já passo Aqui!"(I Already Pass Here!) emerged from a proposal of the Participatory Budget, called "Eu Não Passo Aqui!” (I Don't Pass Here!), which called for the elimination of architectural barriers in a small route of the city. Although it was not selected, this proposal was integrated into the municipality's broader strategic vision, linked to the promotion of walkability. Defined in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, this strategic vision had as a pioneering project, in 2017, the "Areas+" project. The project was implemented in four strategic neighborhoods of the city, creating accessible routes connecting the densified residential areas with the main hubs of the city. The objective of this visit is to get to know some of these interventions, taking advantage of the presence of the stakeholders involved to discuss the relevance of the options taken, as well as to make known some of the methodologies adopted in the context of involvement and participation of citizens. This visit aims to articulate with the theme of Councillor Olga Pereira's conference at the Lisbon event - "Co-creation methodologies for the promotion of pedestrian mobility in Braga".
